Woman’s Club Sewing Circle
The Lakeside Woman’s Club has a sewing group that makes many wonderful items to donate to charities or to sell to raise money for charities and expenses. The group meets at the old church where the general meetings are held. They meet almost every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bring your own lunch or stop and pick up something at one of Lakeside’s many eateries. Even if you don’t sew there are projects you can work on. This is a wonderful group who visit while they work, it’s great fun and cheaper than therapy. See below for a few of the many projects.
The contact person for the sewing group is Nancy DeGreif, 619-562-3559.
Surgery Dolls are small stuffed dolls that are dressed in hospital gowns. These are donated to Balboa Hospital and given to children that are scheduled for surgery. The surgeon can draw on the doll to explain to the child what he will be doing during the surgery. So far in 2017 we have donated 59 dolls.
Crocheted bags made from recycled grocery bags. The grocery bags are flattened and cut into strips. The strips are then looped together and then rolled into a ball, called “plarn” which is used to crochet these tote bags which are great for going to the beach (waterproof and easy drain), carrying books to the library, grocery shopping, even a trash bag for your car.
Operation Smile is a charity that provides surgery to correct cleft palate defects in children around the world. We make small hospital gowns in bright and cheerful colors and patterns for the children to wear.
Dog and cat beds are made using donated fabrics and then stuffed with scraps of fabric and batting. They are then donated to the Humane Society for the dogs and cats to use and go with them to their forever homes.
We donated 146 pet beds in 2017.
Small lap quilts are given to Love on a Leash to be distributed to local area nursing homes. Love on a Leash is a recognized pet provided therapy group throughout the U.S.; formed in the 1980s, incorporated in 1995 as a 501(c)3 charity. They visit schools, libraries, healthcare centers, hospitals, colleges, anywhere needed. Quilts made are also given to other charities to be used as fundraisers. Some quilts are sold to raise money for the club.
The Painted Turtle camp is where children with serious medical conditions celebrate just being kids! Through innovative, camp-based programs that offer a great big dose of fun and support, children with more than 73 medical conditions visit The Painted Turtle each year, reclaiming the joys of childhood. A member of Paul Newman’s renowned Serious Fun Camps (formerly the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps), The Painted Turtle has served over 51,000 children and their families through its Summer and Family Weekend camps since it opened its gates in 2004. We make turtle shaped pillows that are given to the children when they attend these camps.
Care kits are cloth tote bags which are filled with toiletries, t-shirt, fleece blanket, paper and pen, etc. These kits are given to the Sheriff’s Department in Lakeside and Santee. The officers carry one in each car to be given to victims of domestic violence as they often leave their homes with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. This is an ongoing project.
